Saving Mr. Banks - I’m not sure if it is just the nostalgia behind this film, but I enjoyed this quite a bit.  Emma and Tom would make anything watchable but this had that extra little kick of Disney magic without watering down the story.  I think this is one of the better movies of [...]

Nebraska - A great character study of an aging man who is worrying about his legacy more than his life.  Great performances by Dern and June Squibb (in a scene stealing role).  I really enjoyed this film and thought the use of black and white was a perfect choice.  Forte and Odenkirk were solid in [...]

Gravity - I wish Cuaron took less than 6 years to make a movie, but when he comes up with this kind of brilliance he has my approval to take all the time he needs.  Bullock did all the heavy lifting in the acting and should be the favorite for Oscar.  Sci-fi at its best. [...]

Elysium - This is a role that Damon can do in his sleep so that wasn’t the issue.  The issue is that we all saw District 9 and know that Blomkamp is adept at diving into a class struggle, showing the pain and despair of the situation but this film had none of it.  And [...]

Fruitvale Station - Great movie.  Very impactful with the way they began with actual cell phone footage and then shows a dramatization of the day leading up to the incident.  Great performance by Michael B Jordan in the lead and I would find it difficult to believe it won’t be on my year end list.
The [...]

The Way Way Back - I really enjoyed this film.  It doesn’t really have elements that we’ve never seen before but everything just works better here.  The characters are believable and you just hope that this story really exists.  Great protagonist that you root hard for and you desperately want him to get the girl. [...]

Man of Steel - Typical structure at the beginning, Parents on Krypton, etc., and there was some nice set up  to a possible dive into the psyche of a Christ-like figure whose opinion of humanity is greater than our own.  They even gave a reason and motivation for the villain Zod.  And yet it diluted [...]

Oblivion - typical Tom Cruise action movie, and yes I believe he can carry an action movie.  The layout of the desolate future earth was interesting and the twists were effective (one is pretty obvious but still came across as satisfying).  This would be a fine weekend night rental, maybe not your best choice but [...]

Olympus Has Fallen - this movie has all the trappings of a summer blockbuster.  The depiction of the secret service, and all of the white house security detail for that matter, was not very well thought out and forced the story line into a “Die Hard” wannabe but fell far short.  I am not a [...]

Zero Dark Thirty - Great movie that was only harmed by the presence of a TV movie that took some of the steam out of the climax.  Jessica Chastain was great and is a front runner for every award that she is up for.  The torture scenes that are the center of the controversy around [...]
